Authorities by themselves create an aura of martyr and hero around Partidul Nostru [Our Party] leader Renato Usatii, say independent observers and experts, commenting on the situation with the sudden detaining of the politician on Friday and his equally prompt release on Sunday.
According to lawyer, former member of the Central Election Commission Pavel Midrigan, there was no legal basis for Usatii’s detaining.
“The situation is stupid. Why authorities attracted operative officers of the Information and Security Service (ISS) for detaining a public figure? Why was this show necessary? He is a politician, moreover – Balti Mayor, he can be summoned to prosecutors’ office and asked where did he take the recordings of telephone conversations between individuals, suspected of stealing from banks.
Making such a show in the airport means raising of Usatii’s popularity he already has enough of. Besides, the disclosing of Shor and Filat’s telephone talks is one more crushing blow on former LDPM chairman. I do not exclude that Usatii did not tapped anything by himself, but the recordings were transmitted to him, being made by Shor. As only the ISS and two-three Moldovan private companies have special equipment, necessary for wiretapping the cell phone application like Viber”, Midrigan said.
He expressed great doubt that one of Moldovan judges has suddenly demonstrated independence and impartiality, releasing Usatii.
“The same judge of the Sectorul Centru court of Chisinau – Sergiu Bularu was issuing decisions on cases against the Patria Party in late November 2014, which were obviously falsified. I do not exclude that the decision on Usatii was taken upon Vlad Plahotniuc’s tacit consent. I would like to point at the fact that Usatii has very seldom mentioned the latter in his statements”, the lawyer said.
This opinion is shared by Doctor in History, political analyst Ruslan Shevchenko, who maintains that after a rapid arrest and releasing of Usatii, there is reason to believe that he is closely connected with the unofficial leader of the DP Vlad Plahotniuc.
“This hypothesis is proved by Usatii’s actions, directed exclusively against Plahotniuc’s main enemy – LDPM leader Vlad Filat. One more argument for this is Usatii’s multiple attacks directed against his official ally, head of the Party of Socialists (PSRM) Igor Dodon. Russian businessmen, politicians and the Federal Security Service (FSB) (as a foreign citizen cannot work on state enterprise Russian Railroad without FSB’s approval) are not interested in discrediting Dodon at the current stage. Meanwhile, Usatii’s rating upgrade contributes namely to this”, Shevchenko said.
According to him, the recent Usatii’s travel to Moscow was taken for coordinating his efforts on discrediting the PSRM, representatives of the ruling coalition in Moldova, which will allow very soon conducting the reformatting of the ruling coalition.
“His detaining in the airport and short stay in the cell were necessary in order that Plahotniuc to find out what new orders Usatii was given in Moscow and how to further act in the view of reforming power in Moldova”, the historian said.
Expert Ion Leahu reminded that lawyer and former European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) judge Stanislav Pavlovschi said that there was no crime element in Usatii’s actions.
“This is what determined his soon release. As for the loud detention, it was done under the influence of emotions, perhaps. It is humiliating for a state to be a toy in hands of an obvious swindler; on the other hand, this state should not have been destroying its legal frames during decades. Maybe then nobody would have dared to become impudent”, Leahu said.
In his opinion, the release of Usatii means the start of reformatting the country governance, liquidation of even the exterior democracy for the sake of pro-Moscow autocracy, the expert sad.
