Moldova. Vacation for elections

The Moldovan Parliament has decided to hold no plenary sittings until the end of the ongoing local election campaign. The first round of the local elections will be held on June 14 and the second round – on June 28.
Parliament Secretary General Alla Popescu said to Infotag on Monday that the ‘extraordinary vacation’ initiative was put forward by Speaker Andrian Candu and was supported by all parliamentary factions.
“This does not mean that the Parliament’s work will be stopped. There will be no plenary meetings only, but parliamentary standing committees will be working as usual, and deputies will be visiting Moldovan localities”, said Popescu.
“Lately, many deputies have been sending inquiries to the Parliament Secretariat writing about the need to visit provincial regions for canvassing. At the last meeting we saw that many parliamentarians were absent. To avoid lack of quorum, plenary meetings have been cancelled”, said the Parliament Secretary General.
As already reported by Infotag, since the moment when the Parliament’s work was ‘de-blocked’ at the end of January following a 2-month pause cased by the November 30, 2014 parliamentary elections, the new Parliament has held to-date only 17 plenary meetings [by law, such meetings must take place every Thursday and Friday], one extraordinary session and one solemn sitting dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the national flag.
However, the deputies have already organized as many as three extraordinary vacations – last March and April, and are now looking forward to a law-stipulated summer recess to begin in July, after a plenary vacation in June. Meanwhile, over 100 ready draft laws are waiting their turn to be considered by constantly busy lawmakers.
