On October 30, 2016 direct elections of the President of Moldova will be held, in accordance with Parliament’s decision of April 1, 2016. In order to validate the first round of elections it is required a turnout of at least 1/3 of voters included in the electoral lists. If no candidate will meet at least half of the votes, a second round of elections will be held on November 13, 2016 with the participation of the first two candidates that obtained the highest number of votes in the first round. For the second round it is not established a minimum participation threshold.

General information about the 2016 presidential elections
On August 31, 2016 election period began, when relevant government institutions and citizens with passive and active voting rights officially start all election related activities. Entitled to be nominated as candidate for the position of President of the Republic of Moldova are citizens who have the right to vote, have 40 years of age, live permanently or lived in Moldova for not less than 10 years and speak the state language.
Official registration of candidates by the Central Election Commission (CEC) is preceded by the nomination of candidates and establishment of initiative groups to support candidates, comprising around 25–100 people with voting rights. The lists of the members of initiative groups, indicating the leaders of these groups, are to be submitted to the CEC by the nominated candidates for President of Moldova no later than 50 days before election day, until September 9, 2016.
The members of initiative groups represent the nominated candidates and are working on their behalf. CEC registers the initiative groups and issue them special IDs within 3 days from the submission of applications. September 12, 2016 is the deadline for initiative groups registration, and then will be known the names of all potential candidates.
To be registered as candidate for the President of the Republic of Moldova, all applicants are required to submit to CEC subscription lists with the signatures of at least 15 thousand, but not more than 25 thousand supporters with the right to vote. A further condition for registration of candidates is that signatures should be collected from at least half of the administrative territorial units (rayons and municipalities), by at least 600 signatures each.
A voter may support by signature only one candidate. Subscription lists should be submitted to CEC by September 29, 2016. After verifying the correctness of the subscription lists, CEC will decide upon registration of candidates until October 6, 2016. Once registered, candidates can launch their electoral campaigns which will end on October 28, 2016.
