According to the Prosecutor General of Ukraine Vitaly Yarema, his office is investigating crimes committed by the participants of volunteer battalions against locals in the south-east of the country, which were on the side of Ukrainian law enforcers.
The statement was made after the general secretary of the international human rights organization Amnesty International Salil Shetty called on the Prime Minister of Ukraine Arseniy Yatsenyuk to investigate crimes committed by representatives of the volunteer battalion Aydar.
“We have got facts and the criminal proceedings, where representatives of the volunteer battalions committed criminal offenses against locals – these are armed assaults, robberies,” – said the prosecutor general of Ukraine Vitaly Yarema.
On Tuesday evening, the fact of the investigation by the Military Prosecutor of Ukraine (MPU) of almost 150 cases of war crimes committed by members of the country’s western regions, was confirmed by the OSCE observation commission in Ukraine.
Previously, an international human rights organization Amnesty International called on the Ukrainian authorities to investigate cases of war crimes and violations of humanitarian law by the participants of the volunteer battalions operating in the south-east of Ukraine.
According to the results of a two-week mission, the representatives of the organization accuse, in particular, the members of the volunteer battalion Aydar in extortion, kidnapping, use of violence and illegal retention of people under Lugansk.
“The soldiers repeatedly abducted local men, often businessmen or farmers, who were accused of collaboration with the separatists and held them in makeshift places of forced confinement, and then released or handed to representatives of the Security Service of Ukraine”, – the report says.
Its contents at the end of last week were presented by the Amnesty International’s Secretary General Salil Shetty to the Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk.
“This report confirms massive crimes, including war ones, committed routinely and with indulgency of law-enforcement agencies and members of the Aydar battalion”, — the Russian Foreign Ministry’s Commissioner for Human Rights, democracy and the rule of law Constantine Dolgov commented on the report. — The report rightly states, that contrary to the patriotic image of Aydar replicated by the Kiev and western propaganda, among the inhabitants of Ukrainian regions this formation has earned disreputation due to the crimes, atrocities and open banditry.”
According to his words, the crimes mentioned in the report, “are only a part of the total body”: “All these crimes, including the massacre in Odessa in May this year, must be objectively investigated under effective international control, and the perpetrators must be brought to justice.”
